The Challis Lectures

This November, we held our endowed lectures, the Challis Lectures. Professor Gareth Roberts from Warwick University was our invited guest speaker.

Professor Gareth Roberts is a Professor in the Department of Statistics at The University of Warwick.  His research interests include applied probability, Bayesian statistics and computational statistics. His work has made significant contributions to the theory and application of Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms.  He received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Oxford University and a PhD in Statistics from the University of Warwick.

His research has enabled the development of statistical models for the study of epidemics in animal populations, such as bird flu and foot and mouth disease, and has been applied to problems in finance and spatial statistics. He has also made fundamental contributions to infinite dimensional simulation problems and inference in stochastic processes.

Gareth has received many accolades, including the Rollo Davidson Prize of the University of Cambridge in 1999 and the Guy Medal of the Royal Statistical Society, in both Bronze and Silver in 1997 and 2008, respectively. He has also served as the Editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series B (Statistical Methodology).
