UF in England – Inventors, Nurses, Farmers, & Spies: The Curious History of Statistics

Dates:  Summer B:  July 7-August 1, 2025 

Program:
In the first part of this program, students will be introduced to the fascinating people who contributed to the historical beginnings of the fields of statistics and computing in England. Students will learn how the daughter of a notorious English poet came to write some of the first computer code, how a nurse during the Crimean War used data visualization to improve sanitary conditions in hospitals, how an afternoon tea party motivated a young statistician at an agricultural research station to codify the design of experiments, and how mathematicians and statisticians saved thousands of lives by breaking the Enigma code. In the second part of this program, students will be housed
at Royal Holloway, University of London, and will conduct a research project inspired by these famous English statisticians. Students will work in teams using data available from our various program venues to analyze the data and to present their findings. Students may have the opportunity to collaborate with local experts.

Locations:

This program will take students to sites critical to the history of statistics in Cambridge and London. The research component of the program will take place while students are based at Royal Holloway, University of London, Egham.

Eligibility Requirements:

— Minimum 3.0 GPA
— Must be in good standing
— Open to all majors; preference will be given to students who are BS/BA Statistics majors or minors; BS Data Science or on the Data Analytics Certificate
— Students are recommended to have taken a basic Statistics course

Course Information:

Students will earn credit for the following courses:
– STA 4956 / IDS 4956 Overseas Studies in Statistics (3 credits)
– STA 4930 Special Topics: Overseas Research Project (3 credits)
Total Number of Credits Offered: 6 UF GPA Credits

2024 PRICING

Undergraduate Program Fee: $7,765

Graduate Program Fee: $7,876

A $395 nonrefundable deposit toward the total cost of the program is due at the time of application. The remaining fees are due no later than 45 days prior to departure. If you receive financial aid, you can defer payment until it disburses. Deferment decisions will be based on the amount of aid to be received.

Tuition for 6 credits, housing, program excursions, international health insurance, and emergency medical assistance.

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED

Round-trip airfare, meals, and additional personal travel and expenses.
