Welcoming Our Newest Faculty

Ziping Xu is an accomplished academic who will be joining the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida as an assistant professor in 2024. Currently, he is completing a one-year postdoctoral training at Harvard University under the guidance of Professor Susan Murphy. In 2023, Ziping earned his PhD in Statistics from the University of Michigan, where he was fortunate to work with Professor Ambuj Tewari. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Data Science from Peking University. During his doctoral studies, Ziping was honored with the Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship. His research centers on the theoretical aspects of machine learning, with a focus on reinforcement learning and transfer learning. Driven by his passion for applying machine learning to real-world problems, he also actively explores the field of science and healthcare. Beyond his academic pursuits, Ziping finds joy in cooking and indie games during his leisure time. He enjoys moments spent with his family, including his twin brother, Zifan Xu, who is also a machine learning researcher at UT Austin.

Sohom Bhattacharya will join the Department of Statistics as an assistant professor in Fall 2023. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton University, hosted by Professor Jianqing Fan. In 2022, Sohom earned his PhD in Statistics from Stanford University, advised by Professor Sourav Chatterjee. Sohom’s research interest lies in the intersection of high-dimensional statistics and theoretical machine learning. He has also worked in statistical network analysis and applied probability. Sohom enjoys hiking, playing chess, and solving cryptic crosswords during his leisure time.

David Lindberg is excited to join the Department of Statistics as a lecturer. He previously taught math and statistics at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he attained his bachelor’s degree, The Ohio State University, where he attained his master’s degree, and at UF while working toward his PhD. David also brings experience working in the industry as a consulting actuary. In addition to his role as a lecturer teaching statistics, David looks forward to being involved with the actuarial science program at UF, providing mentorship to students working toward a career in actuarial science. In his free time, David loves solving sudoku puzzles, running, and spending time with his four cats.
