New Faculty Join the Department of Statistics

Juhyung Lee, PhD, joined the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida as lecturer in Fall 2021. Lee received his PhD and MS degrees in Statistics from the University of Georgia in 2021 and 2020, where he researched small area estimation. He received his BA degree in Applied Statistics from Yonsei University, South Korea. Having grown up in China, Lee is also fluent in Chinese.

 

Karl Oskar Ekvall, assistant professor, earned his PhD in Statistics from the University of Minnesota in 2019 and has since worked as a postdoctoral researcher and assistant professor, first at Vienna University of Technology and most recently at Karolinska Institute in his native Sweden. His research focuses on mixed models and asymptotic theory for likelihood-based inference in non-standard settings. Karl Oskar enjoys spending time with his wife Lin and their two kids, Alma and Oliver, exploring nature, working out and reading novels.

 

Beth Johnson holds over 25 years of experience working in the field of statistics education and has two broad and overlapping areas of interest: assessment and curriculum development. She developed and directed a new undergraduate program while an associate teaching professor at George Mason University and created many of the upper-level applied courses for this program. Johnson also served as a program assessment specialist at GMU and Wilkes University. As a lecturer at UF, she enjoys working with students and creating new educational experiences, such as the UF History of Statistics Study Abroad Program. Johnson maintains an interest in K-12 education by working with groups such as the Sports Analytics Club Program and the Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools. She’s also contributed to the AP Statistics program for 20 years, most recently as a Question Leader.
